“I have run into people who do not know their calling,” says Oprah Winfrey. Steven Pressfield responds that people are deterred from their calling because of resistance: “Resistance is that negative force that arises whenever we try to move from a lower level to a higher level. We encounter resistance when we try to get out of our own petty ego and move to a higher level.”
“The taking of any principled stand in the face of adversity meets resistance,” says Pressfield. See the video accompanying this article for an interesting conversation between Winfrey and Pressfield on resistance. It is just a snippet from the hour-long interview of Pressfield by Oprah Winfrey on “Super Soul Sunday” which aired the end of September 29, 2013. See Winfrey’s entire one-hour interview online.
Resistances’ greatest hits
Pressfield’s book, “the WAR of ART,” give examples of when we are most likely to meet resistance. Here are a few of them.
- The launching of any entrepreneurial activity by an entrepreneur.
- Any diet or health regimen.
- Any spiritual advance.
- Any tighter abdominals.
- Educational endeavors of any kind.
- Decisions to marry.
- Decisions to have children.
- Decisions to patch a rocky relationship.
See Examiner article, “3 tricks to find your calling,” where Winfrey and Pressfield discuss how others sabotage us throughout life for fear of losing us. Oprah also discusses how we sabotage ourselves. “When we are almost there, you have to be aware, and keep getting up earlier and earlier to meet your goal,” says Winfrey.
In the flow
Only by overcoming resistance in life can we find our calling. We become effective, energized and rewarded. See "Oprah Winfrey: Finding your calling," to understand how to get started.
