When Alice Walker's book The Color Purple was published in 1982, odds are she didn't expect it to become the franchise that it has blossomed into. She probably didn't dream that it would win the Pulitzer Prize in 1983, become a multi Academy Award nominated movie in 1985 or that it would be nominated for 11 Tony Awards in it's first year as a broadway musical. "The Color Purple" has made it's place in entertainment history, and now it's back to make it's presence felt on the Dallas stage.
For eight shows only, "The Color Purple" will be appearing at the Music Hall at Fair Park as a part of the Summer Musical series. The national touring company which originally opened in 2005, has given birth to theatrical performances for the likes of recording artist Chaka Khan and BeBe Winans. The play also presented Fantasia Barrino with her theater debut and 2007 Theatre World Award for her role as "Celie". Although Barrino is not scheduled to perform in the Dallas presentation, the show will provide seasoned performances from regulars Felicia P. Fields as "Sofia", Angela Robinson as "Shug" Rufus Bonds Jr. as "Mister" and LaToya London as "Nettie".
"The Color Purple" will open on Tuesday January 19th and run through Sunday January 24th. All performances are 8pm with the exception of two matinee performances at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. The show will move to Ft. Worth's Bass Performance Hall from January 26th through January 31st. For ticket information contact Ticketmaster.
