Yesterday Oprah premiered the much publicized Best Life series. The inaugural show about fitness and weight loss included an interview with celebrity fitness trainer Bob Greene, although most of the show featured Oprah discussing her embarrassment and regret over her recent weight gain. Bob Greene offered very little concrete fitness or weight loss advice except to agree with Oprah that "falling off the wagon is not a weight issue but a love issue". So Oprah pronounced that in order to become fit, " 2009 is the year we give ourselves love."
To that end, Oprah shared the changes she has made to make health and wellness a higher priority in her life. She suggested that all viewers make three changes. First, put yourself on your to-do list. Schedule time for personal priorities just as you would schedule an appointment for your child or spouse. Second, Oprah recommends that viewers plan their meals. By doing so, she says, you resist the temptation to skip meals and then binge. Lastly, regarding exercise, Oprah is a fan of resistance training. "Less cardio and more resistance" claims Oprah, who says she lift weights everyday, focusing on a different body part with each workout.
Aside from those three steps, not much practical advice was given about specific diets or weight loss techniques. Bob Greene promised more practical exercise and weight loss advice in his upcoming webcast on January 12. Viewers can register for the event by visiting Oprah.com In preparation for the webcast, Bob asks viewers to start a weight loss journal and begin writing by answering these five questions:
1. What are you really hungry for?
2. Why are you overweight?
3. Why have you been unable to maintain weight loss in the past?
4. What in your life is not working?
5. Why do you want to lose weight?
