Celebrity tabloids have exploded with news this weekend that Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network has been slammed with a sexual discrimination lawsuit on Friday, Feb.1.
‘TMZ” and the “Hollywood Reporter” are reporting Carolyn Hommel, former Senior Director of Scheduling and Acquisitions of OWN, Oprah’s television network, has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit against her former employer for allegedly losing her job as a direct result of medical leave due to pregnancy.
Carolyn Hommel was hired by OWN in 2010 with the assumption she would quickly advance to Vice President within her division, however she was demoted to a temp and barred from meetings upon returning from medical leave after giving birth, subsequently getting fired only one month after delivering her baby.
The fired executive of Oprah’s television network had been advised to reapply for the Vice President position, however the job was given to someone else. Carolyn Hommel is also claiming her former supervisor, Michael Garner, invented a fictional account of her work behavior in her employment review, claiming she was not up to par for her duties to become VP.
Carolyn Hommel was fired from Oprah Winfrey’s OWN television network on March 19, 2012 and claims in her sexual discrimination suit that her demotion and dismissal were based upon her pregnancy and medical leave.
The sexual discrimination lawsuit filed against Oprah’s OWN also alleges “disability discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, retaliation and willful failure to pay wages upon discharge or termination.”
