Oprah has been hit with a lawsuit according to The Hollywood Reporter. On Friday Feb. 1, Carolyn Hommel filed papers claiming that she was discriminated against because she was a woman. Hommel had great success working at OWN -- until she had a baby. She says that little by little she was weened off of her job and eventually she was laid off.
"Despite receiving a favorable performance review and being told she was on-track to become a vice president, she was replaced by a temporary employee when she was forced to take a medical leave during her pregnancy. After giving birth to her daughter, Hommel was told she was being laid off, " THR reports.
Oprah was hit with this lawsuit on the heels of news that OWN wasn't doing very well. The network is not bringing in as many viewers as it should to stand alone in the television world. Oprah has struggled quite a bit trying to make OWN successful. This lawsuit only adds to Oprah's problems and could have her taking on more than she bargained for.
"Hommel claims her demotion and layoff are a direct result of her becoming pregnant and requiring a medical leave. She is seeking unspecified damages," THR reports. The lawsuit alleges "sex discrimination, disability discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, retaliation and willful failure to pay wages upon discharge or termination."
