Oprah hit with a lawsuit: Sex and pregnancy discrimination hard to believe?

Oprah has been hit with a lawsuit. On Feb. 2, 2013, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the 59-year-old talk show host and owner of OWN is being sued by a former employee who is claiming she's a victim of sex and pregnancy discrimination. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Carolyn Hommel. Hommel claims she was hired in 2010, received favorable reviews and was on track to become a vice president. She further claims she was replaced by a temporary employee, was forced to take a medical leave and was eventually laid off.

If OWN and Oprah are indeed guilty of what Hommel claims, the act would be surprising to many of Winfrey's fans. The woman worth in upwards of $2.7 billion is popular among her viewership for a reason. Oprah has always been considered a woman who people can talk to, especially stars who are in trouble, such as Lance Armstrong. She is known as someone who is caring and compassionate. A sex and pregnancy discrimination suit is not consistent with a person who exhibits such traits.

Many fans of the talk show host will want to know if she has an explanation or a defense for this lawsuit against her and her network.
