The 59-year-old television personality, media mogul, actress and philanthropist explained what happened. She said she was juggling one thing after another at the same time she was overseeing OWN, her "struggling network," as she calls it. Additionally, she was shooting the civil rights movie "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
Oprah admits things became too intense for her. She says it is true that she showed signs of a nervous breakdown as a result of her trying to do too many things at the same time.
Oprah came to the realization that she herself was heading for a breakdown when she was interviewing "Kony 2012" director Jason Russell about his breakdown that resulted in him running naked in the streets of San Diego. It was caught on tape, and the video went viral.
"I was sitting and listening to Jason Russell describe his symptoms. ... Saying, 'Um, this sounds pretty familiar to me.'"
After the Russell interview, Oprah interviewed Fergie a few weeks later. It was then that she realized she was ready to regain control of her life.
What were Oprah's symptoms?
In Oprah's own words, she said:
"In the beginning, it was just sort of speeding and a kind of numbness and going from one thing to the next thing to the next thing. I will tell you when I realized that I thought, 'All right, if I don't calm down I'm gonna be in serious trouble.' I was in the middle of doing voiceovers, you know? And I remember closing my eyes in between each page because looking at the page and the words at the same time was too much stimulation for my brain."
Oprah said she wasn't ready to run naked in the streets, but she had reached a point where she couldn't take in any more stimulation.
OWN is doing well and Oprah's role in "Lee Daniels' The Butler" was successful. So Oprah is back on track, but she said it was a close call.
