Opposite Day - A Devotion

Deuteronomy 11:26-28 (AMP)
Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse—the blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you this day; and the curse if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you this day to go after other gods, which you have not known.

Good Morning (or afternoon)! Today is opposite day actually every day can be the day that you choose to be blessed. When you woke up this morning, the Lord had already provided the mercy that you would need to get through this day until the very end. He provided enough so that your hope would remain strong and intact no matter what storm you may be facing. You are blessed. The Word of God tells us that we have everything that we need to live a godly life which raises our standard of living to that of Jesus Christ. To reverse the curse in our life is accomplished from start to finish by Jesus Christ as it allows us to step readily into right standing with God making our life limitless. You decide the course of your day. Jesus overcame the world so you don’t have to. By following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ is like traversing a carefully laid mine field which was left by the enemy for your immediate defeat, but Jesus has marked a clear path right through it so why do we constantly insist on doing it our way? Each new day is an invitation to change our heart, mind and course of direction. But it is entirely up to you if this will be opposite day or just the same ole thing.

Isaiah 59:10-14 (NLT)
We grope like the blind along a wall, feeling our way like people without eyes. Even at brightest noontime, we stumble as though it were dark. Among the living, we are like the dead. We growl like hungry bears; we moan like mournful doves. We look for justice, but it never comes. We look for rescue, but it is far away from us. For our sins are piled up before God and testify against us. Yes, we know what sinners we are. We know we have rebelled and have denied the LORD. We have turned our backs on our God. We know how unfair and oppressive we have been, carefully planning our deceitful lies. Our courts oppose the righteous and justice is nowhere to be found.

Before we even get this thing off the ground, you must understand one thing to move on. Life is not fair. It was not fair when Jesus lived. It is not fair now. It will never be fair. Bad things will happen to good people. The good will still die young. We look for justice in a lawless world. We look for acceptance, affirmation and affection in a place where love has grown cold. The world has turned its back on God. It is moving quickly in the opposite direction even in a country founded on the words “In God We Trust”. The pursuit of life, liberty and happiness is marked by people groping blindly in the darkness of this world claiming freedom in a crowded cell. We live sentenced to death failing to find the Light of His Love and putting in our fragile heart for safekeeping. Yet in the darkness, we cry out for the Lord but refuse to move in His Direction to be where He is. We know that we are sinners but have convoluted grace. We think it is a way to step over our sins, but the Blood of Jesus flows to wash away our sin. It is to clear our sins piled up between us and the living God and choose blessing. God never turned His Back on us but rather we presented ours to God choosing less than His Best and allowing compromise to seep into our life like cancer eating away at our hopes and dreams. No one can reverse a blessing that God has given you. (Numbers 23:20) If you are looking for justice in this world, forget about it. If you are waiting for your turn at the “fair”, it’s not going to happen. But those who choose to live in the Blessings of God specifically ordained for their life, they will turn back to the Lord and walk in His Ways.

Deuteronomy 30:6 (NLT)
“The LORD your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live!”

Create in me a clean heart and renew a right (loyal) spirit. The words of Psalm 51 ring in my ears today as I consider my heart. It is the most fickle part of my body. I need the Lord to change my heart in order to change the course of my life and future generations. Why a loyal and steadfast spirit one may ask? Because if we do not work on loyalty and commitment in our life, we will turn away tomorrow. You can never take for granted the condition of your heart. God says, “Change your hearts and stop being stubborn.” (Deuteronomy 10:16) To change from a life of cursing to a life of blessing requires a change of heart that is consistent. You must keep working the heart to keep it pliable and useful on the altar of God. A stubborn heart demands its own way and sees to its own needs. A submitted heart will follow the Lord’s Leading even when it is in a different direction. This makes all the difference in the outcomes of life. Jesus Christ gives us victory if we can keep our heart on course with Him. It has already been declared all we can do is claim it. A true change of heart will be demonstrated by a life that consistently produces good fruit in season and out of season. It increases productivity as we flourish in the Presence of God now and forevermore. By setting our heart on the Lord and keeping the course, we are now in the perfect position to live in the overflowing blessings of the Lord.

Isaiah 55:6-9 (NLT)
Seek the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously. My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

A change of heart will produce a change of direction in our life. The heart and head work together each day. Motivation is from the desire of our heart. It is passion that promote purpose in our life and also leads to its interruption. Until we align our deepest desire with that of Jesus Christ, we will never be fulfilled. You came with a plan. You have a purpose. There are blessings and promises with your name on them that you have yet to receive. You can claim them all you want but until you go where they are to get them, they are nothing more than a dream or vision. You can have all that God has promised and live the life that He planned but it requires a change of direction. Are you willing to give up your way to follow His Way? God’s Word will do what it was sent forth to do. Are you the one keeping these promises from coming to fruition in your life? (Isaiah 55:11)

I John 5:1-3 (NLT)
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ[a] has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.

Those who decide to love God with all their heart and change their mind to follow the Lord walking in His Way will obey His Commandments not because they have to but simply because they want to. Is this important? Yes, vitally. Grace covers our inadequacy but should never be uses an excuse for disobedience. Loving God means keeping His Commandments. You expect Him to keep His Promises don’t you? Think about it. A life in love with Jesus will turn their heart around to be motivated by love and not greed. A mind yielded to God in a covenant relationship has thought about it and agreed to give their life away. So now what? Obedience. Obedience is the opposite of rebellion. Each day is a new opportunity to scoop up the grace and new mercy of God to wipe away the residue, guilt and shame of our past including yesterday. It is a prime opportunity to decide that today will be different.

James 3:7-11 (NLT)
People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water?

Today is opposite day. If you want the Blessings of God to pour over your life from the Windows of Heaven, use your mouth to open the window rather than allowing grumbling, complaining or whining to slam it shut. These are words born of doubt that represents an unbroken, stubborn heart and a confused not made up mind. The truth of the matter is that you cannot have a blessed day and cursed day all at the same time. You make the determination how things will go in your life by the confession of your mouth. Salvation comes when we believe in our heart and CONFESS with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. In the words of many youth ministers, “Shut your pie hole!” The power of life and death are in your words. If you don’t have anything nice to say, then shut it. If you do not know what to pray, ask the Holy Spirit and stop rambling off your grocery list to God. It is time that we take each word and savor it before we speak. See if it is good, kind and beneficial to our life. Choose your words wisely, friend for they determine the outcomes in our life.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NLT)
We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

If you want to change the contents of your mouth, it begins in our heart. We must capture every rebellious thought that is attempting to infiltrate our heart holding it subject to the Word of God. You will not know His Word if you do not study it. You will not understand it without the Holy Spirit. You have everything you need to live victoriously. The rest is up to you. If you would just turn around, there is Jesus! We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of our testimony. Only those who decide this life is not for me and choose to be different will find what they are looking for. The Kingdom of God is opposite of what this world has to offer. If you are looking for worldly things in the Kingdom of God, you will be disappointed. God has a plan for our life that includes a future and hope. He promised that those who seek Him wholeheartedly can have this life. We just have to turn around and take one step in the right direction. It is completely up to you! Will today by your opposite day, too?

Psalm 51:7-12 (NLT)
Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me Restore to me the joy of your salvation and make me willing to obey you.
