The National Shrine of the Little Flower is hosting a talk, Wednesday, June 20, to help area Catholics become better informed about the HHS Mandate. Richard Thompson, President of Thomas Moore Law Center and the former Oakland County Prosecutor who prosecuted Jack Kevorkian, will present, ‘The HHS Mandate and the Erosion of Your Religious Liberties,’ at 7 pm in Royal Oak.

Event organizers encourage everyone who believes in religious freedom to come and learn more: ‘We all need to promote this event at our churches and with our families, friends and co-workers. There are still many people who don't understand the threat that the HHS Mandate holds for our religious freedom. The threat is real. We must do everything we can to educate ourselves and our fellow citizens.’

The HHS Mandate is a regulation issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, requiring employers to provide insurance plans that cover contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs regardless of religious objections. Religious employers will be forced to provide services that contradict their teachings or they will incur heavy fines; a direct attack against all people of faith who object to a law for religious reasons.

'The mandate is not about contraception and this is not just a Catholic issue,' the organizers are quick to point out. ‘It is a direct attack against religious freedom as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and opens the door to further erosion of religious freedoms.’

‘We cannot sit back and think that someone else will take action!’ urges event promoter Candace Shankin. ‘You are called!’
