Big government politicians and magicians have a lot in common.
Magicians use sleight of hand to show the audience what is in one hand while hiding what is in the other hand. Big government politicians tell the public what benefits they are bestowing on them with one hand while hiding what they are taking away from the public with the other hand.
Most welfare recipients believe they are receiving great benefits from the government. They do not see what would be available to them if the government was not big enough to hand out welfare checks.
According to yahoo.answers.com the average welfare recipient receives $400 to $600 per month.
The welfare recipient has no idea what kind of well paying jobs would be available if the government were much smaller.
What would be available to citizens were it not for big government is called opportunity cost.
What is the real opportunity cost of the big government the United States has today?
Below is a list of the problems caused by big government written by Carla Howell on the “Center for Small Government” website.
“There are many ways that our lives are compromised, diminished, and even destroyed by Big Government Programs. You or someone you know has probably suffered at the hands of Big Government in some of the following ways:
- Lower wages
- Lost or devalued property or diminished wealth
- Lost jobs
- Lost career opportunities
- Financial insecurity
- Invasions of privacy
- Ignorance and illiteracy
- Dependency and indignity
- Social intolerance, divisiveness, hate
- Higher crime rates
- Pollution, deforestation, and other environmental damage
- Disease, trauma, pain, and death
- Intimidation and terror”
The only way to demonstrate how much people are losing due to big government is to start downsizing the government.
