The summary findings of the 2011 Afghan Opium Survey was just released today by the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Kabul are not good! This is not good at all!
Opium poppy-crop cultivation in Afghanistan reached 131,000 hectares in 2011, 7 per cent higher than in 2010.
This is terrible.
Opium is the main funding source for the Taliban, which uses the funds derived from the sale of raw opium to purchase weapons and pay its fighters in cash.
The U.S. military cannot hope to win in Afghanistan so long as the enemy’s main funding source remains intact.
To make matters worse the U.S. is actually paying (and protecting) farmers to grow opium in that country. You do not believe me. See YouTube video: “US Military Helps Terrorist's Grow Heroin - US Funding Taliban” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElEciFI0Pew

April Smith of Charlotte N.C. said: "I had no freaking clue we were actually paying farmers to grow heroin in Afghanistan. I'm totally shocked beyond belief by that. If you didn't show me that video on Youtube I would have never believed it."
AFGHANISTAN – IS THE WORLDS LARGEST PRODUCER OF OPIUM
It has been estimated that 90 percent of the world’s opium comes from Afghanistan and the fields our troops are protecting.
This is totally out of control...
Oddly officials in charge counter narcotics at the United Nations actually think they are doing a good job?
In one news report, talking about the increase in opium production one official complimented another official on what a good job he was doing:
“I commend the work of the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) and the Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA). Both institutions have worked hard to improve their overall performances,” said UNODC Executive Director, Yury Fedotov (see report: Opium production in Afghanistan shows increase, prices set to rise
http://www.irna.ir/ENNewsShow.aspx?NID=30606749&SRCH=1).
Come on now? Really?
All the indicators of opium production in Afghanistan are up by 7% in just one year? How is that a success?
I think the UNODC Executive Director Yuri Fedkov is smoking some of that opium from Afghanistan.
How else do you explain such an idiotic statement like that?
Opium, without any doubt is a very profitable business in Afghanistan in 2011. Thanks in part to the American military, which protect it.
9% OF Gross Domestic Product
Opium is worth and estimated US $1.4 billion or 9 per cent of the Afghanistan‘s GDP!
If the profits of manufacturing and trafficking heroin are added to this figure, opium represents a significant part of the Afghan economy and provides considerable funding to the enemy responsible for killing our soldiers in that country.
Here is the miserable part of all this - we are actually subsidizing it as American taxpayers?
We are also subsidizing terrorism! We might as well be buying the bullets that the insurgents are using to kill us in Afghanistan. That is what opium is. That is what opium represents!
Opium also helps fuel corruption, and misery in Afghanistan…
Fact - Afghanistan is one of the most corrupt narco states on earth! Afghanistan also suffers from one of the highest rates of opiate consumption in the world with a current prevalence rate of 2.65 per cent.
In 2005, the prevalence rate of opiate use was 1.4 per cent. This is a dramatic increase, any way you look at it.
