Opinion: Ohio Execution Sparks Debate

No matter what the condemned is accused of, a case involving the death penalty will always spark nationwide debate.

Many people simply do not agree that taking one life for another is the right punishment.

However, the recent execution of a condemned killer in Ohio has sparked debate for different reasons.

Dennis McGuire, who was sentenced to death for the 1989 murder of a pregnant woman, was recently put to death, executed with a new, controversial combination of lethal drugs. McGuire apparently died a painful death at the state's hand.

It took over 20 minutes before finally he finally took his last breath.Witnesses to the execution reported hearing disturbing, painful-sounding noises coming from McGuire as he died.

The lengthy time of the execution was extremely unusual. However, even before the execution took place, news that the state of Ohio would be using the cocktail of drugs in the execution sparked debate. The drugs used were considered experimental, and had never before been used before in a lethal injection.

McGuire's family is now filing a lawsuit. They believe that he suffered unnecessarily during his execution, and that the experimental drugs should not be used in future executions.

While some people argue that convicted murderers should not be entitled to a pain-free death, others do not believe executions should be so painful for the condemned.

However, just because someone has taken a life and been sentenced to death, does that mean that they should also experience a painful death? That is a question that is up for much debate.
