Opinion: A Union in Wrestling? Maybe

Sort of adding onto my earlier column, I've asked and pondered many times what would happen if there was a "union" that regulated wrestling promotions and wrestlers in the state of Michigan. I see how many say it's an easy payday for the union, but if it COULD be done properly, anyone going to a wrestling show would know that the guy across the ring from them knows what they are doing, and NOT have to go by there word or the promoters. Not saying that promoters already have the hard task to do a background check on the talent they have in there show, but it could put some at ease. A working union would in my opinion help weed out guys who have burned bridges with other promoters and think they can book better or try to cross and take away from the people who helped them get in the buisness. I have seen countless "promoters" who have done this in the years I have watched the local scene, start there own training camp, then throw guys who in all reality are a hazard to all around them into a ring and try to make money off it.These "unitards"(untrained-yarders) have popped up alot lately and taken away from those who have gone years taking bumps to get where they are, and a union would catch these wrestlers and promoters before they opened the door to take away buisness from real professionals.

A union would make promoters make there buisness a legit company with the state, which could help possibly with sponsorships and promoting, and wrestlers would be cardholders, showing that they have legit been trained by someone who knows what they are doing. Now I see the one problem would be as in all unions, pay. THAT itself I see would be the one single drawback, considering not all shows have the same fan base or expenses per show, as well as outside talent coming in, that adds to the equation. Training schools and trainers would have to go through the "ringer" to be legit but again, safer to know that each person coming out of there is classified as trained then someone going in, taking a few bumps, then deciding "I'm trained enough" then go out and demand money that is not theres and injuring others.
