As Operation Gratitude continues strong, predictions of candy weight look to more than double last years 21 tons sent to the troops. The program dubbed "Halloween Candy Buy-Back" which starting from the day after Halloween collects candy through to the 5 of December to send to our troops over seas. This is a small way to show the men and women of our all volunteer military just how much we appreciate their service by sending over care packages of leftover Halloween candy.
This year Operation Gratitude founder Carolyn Blashek has added a new and fun way to boost the candy drives success. With every letter you write to a U.S. Soldier deployed, you're entered in the "Guess the Candy Weight Contest". Of the truck loads of candy that's arriving daily from Dentist offices, elementary schools, and families across the country the opportunity to make a guess with every letter you write becomes more and more challenging. The winner who guesses the weight closest with out going over is going to receive a gift card from Target for $250. Also, Operation Gratitude is going to randomly draw one letter in which Target has agreed to donate an X-Box 360 to the lucky author.
Without giving away too much information on the weight of the candy to date, Operation Gratitude founder Carolyn Blashek has announced that "in the last 3 weeks, we received more candy than all of last year!" The organizations largest single day intake thus far netted 2,225 pounds of candy.
Another difference from last year is the cost to send the candy as well. Last years cost per package was $10. Since then there's been two postal increases, raising the total to $11. a package. The $1. difference may not seem like much at first, but note that if the operation nets the same $600,000. they did last year, that would still leave 6,000 troops without a package. As the final date draws near, the organization is asking for donations to help send this record amount of candy gathered this year out to the brave men and women of our armed services.
