Every year OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, organizes National Opera Week as a time through which opera-related organizations and individuals engage and increase the “opera fan base” through hundreds of free events. The designated week for 2013 will run from October 25 through November 3. Here in San Francisco, Opera Parallèle will participate in National Opera Week through a joint project with the San Francisco Unified School District.
This project will be a collaborative production of The Spider’s Revenge by Peter Maxwell Davies. This opera was composed to be performed by young people, in this case students in the San Francisco public school system. The story behind the libretto invites children to discover the wonders of the insect world and recognize that there is a place for each of us on the earth.
Opera Parallèle will undertake this production as part of their Hands-On Opera Program, funded this year through the generous support of the Kimball Foundation. Artistic direction will be by Roma Olivera, who is the Opera Parallèle Educational Programs Manager. She will be assisted by Artistic Director Nicole Paiement and resident stage director Brian Staufenbiel.
In keeping with the mission of National Opera Week, the resulting performance will be free. It will be presented on Saturday, November 2, at 1 p.m. The venue will be the Forum Theater of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park.
