Opening this weekend is the new horror thriller You’re Next. Synopsis:
One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, You’re Next reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped...until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.
It stars Sharni Vinson (Erin), Nicholas Tucci (Felix), Wendy Glenn (Zee), AJ Bowen (Crispian), Joe Swanberg (Drake), Amy Seimetz (Aimee), Ti West (Tariq), with Rob Moran (Paul), and Barbara Crampton (Aubrey), L.C. Holt (Lamb Mask), Simon Barrett (Tiger Mask), Lane Hughes (Fox Mask).
I’ve been hearing about You’re Next for a few years now. I’ve been hoping to see it, but unfortunately this home invasion genre has turned into total junk of late. The Purge is one of my most hated films of the summer (if not the year), but I had heard good things about this. The cast is a bunch of relative unknowns. I know Joe Swanberg more for directing/writing Drinking Buddies (which if you haven’t seen, you should). Ti West is known more for directing (V/H/S) and I’ve never seen it, but Sharni Vinson I guess was the lead in Step Up 3D.
So what did I think of You’re Next? I liked it. Pretty sure I liked it a lot actually. It’s a thousand times better than The Purge and probably the first home invasion movie I’ve liked since The Strangers. It’s violent, I mean violent. At the screening in Boston a terrible mother took a kid with her who probably wasn’t any older than 8. It opens with nudity and later on a kitchen appliance is used at one point not in the way the manufacturer hoped for. Parents, don’t be idiots, leave the kids at home.
The film is also difficult to talk about because there’s at least one major twist if not two. You should have a hint about them by the time it happens, but overall they worked. Going into the screening I hadn’t even seen a trailer for the film, but I guess they do show Sharni Vinson’s character kicking some butt. She’s hands down the best part of the film. It’s way better than Alyce Kills or Girls Against Boys and Vinson should get a lot more job offers after this one. She’s hot, has a cool Aussie accent, kicks a lot of butt and I said hot right?
You’re Next doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. There’s no terrible “1%ers are evil” agenda like in The Purge and it doesn’t hide the blood and gore. In fact, there’s tons of it as it should be. The musical score is great and feels like a throwback to 1980s slasher flicks that used music and a score to create tension. There’s all kinds of weapons used for kills instead of just being lazy and going with guns. People actually try to think about things and how they would actually protect themselves and what to use as weapons. Plus there’s nudity and lots of blood. Sure I’m repeating myself there, but come on, that’s what real horror should have.
The film should do pretty well at the box office. The end of Summer Blockbuster Season is upon us and there aren’t a whole lot of new movies out there. This is pretty good and another new release (in the States at least), The World’s End, should compete for the top position. Both films would make for a great doubleheader so do yourself a favor and go see both. Both have laughs and blood (one with the red stuff, the other with blue blood) and if you are a fan of genre pieces, both are worth your time.
