Last night was the opening night of Catch Me If You Can at the Woodlawn Theatre. This musical is the true story of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr and it is based on the 2002 movie of the same name and the movie was in turn based on Abagnale’s autobiography. It is playing until Friday May 11, 2014.

There was a pre-show VIP reception with appetizers and drinks inspired by the show. The mostly adult audience then settled in and the show started a few minutes after the 7:30p.m. scheduled start time.

The opening scene takes place at the Miami International Airport where Frank is stopped by FBI Agent Carl Hanratty who has been chasing him for some time. He asks for a chance to tell his story and does so in true TV game show style. The first number ‘Live in Living Color’ is a catchy tune and sets the pace for the rest of the show. Most of the songs are simple, easy to understand and advance the storyline and the extremely talented cast made it a joy to experience. Standout performances include “Seven Wonders” by Frank Abagnale Jr (Brian Hodges) and Brenda Strong (Reagan Wilson) and “Fly, Fly Away” in which Brenda Strong sings a heartfelt lament about her love for Frank.

Catch Me If You Can is a musical about family and loss and one teenager’s way of coping with it all. Since it takes place in the 1960s the music and staging is inspired by that era. It is told with humor and heart and is sure to please audiences of all ages.
