Opening Day 2014 TV schedules for MLB on ESPN and ESPN2 have been released. The March 31 Opening Day TV schedule will include the Seattle Mariners on the network for the first time since 2011. A report from late Thursday (Jan. 9) reveals that there will be five games on the two channels, beginning with the Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates at 10 a.m. PT.
Felix Hernandez will likely get the start for the Mariners as they open on the road against the Los Angeles Angels. That game will take place at 7 p.m. PT on ESPN2. It is also very likely that Jared Weaver will be getting the call for the Angels. That is a great pitching duel to begin the season and will certainly give one of the American League West teams a nice bit of momentum to start the year.
March 31 won't serve as the 2014 Opening Day for all teams in Major League Baseball. On March 22-23, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will open the season with two games in Sydney, Australia. It is the first time that the league has undertaken the idea. Then the San Diego Padres will host the Dodgers on March 30 as the first game of the regular season in the United States.
The Seattle Mariners begin the season with three games against the Angels and then four games against the Oakland Athletics on the road. The team doesn't play its first game at Safeco Field until Tuesday, April 8 against the Angels. It's a short five-game homestand before the team heads back on the road for four games against the Texas Rangers and three against the Miami Marlins. By the end of April, the team will have played 16 road games and just 11 home games.
