Opening ceremony of 2014 Winter Olympics viewed San Diego style

The viewing of the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics was done in pure San Diego style aboard the U.S.S. Midway. The Midway was open to the public with large screen viewing areas in both the hanger bay and on the flight deck. With the backdrop of downtown San Diego as well as the bay front, it was also the perfect time to announce plans to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to San Diego.

The San Diego 2024 Exploratory Committee debuted their city bid video that will be sent to the U.S. Olympic Committee to positive reactions from the crowd. On hand as well were several Olympic athletes who call San Diego home, showing their support for the Olympic Games.

No Winter Olympics would be complete without an ice rink and area for throwing snow balls and making snowmen, which were both set up on the flight deck of the Midway. Both young and old enjoyed the winter fun.

Watching the Olympics opening ceremonies on board the flight deck of an aircraft carrier was a truly memorable, and unique, experience, as was seeing San Diego come together to witness a piece of history.
