Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 6-10 p.m. at the Downtown's drkrm Gallery located at 727 S. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014 (323.271.5635) will have an opening ceremony for 10 images from the iconic photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984). In the 1940s Adams was on assignment as photojournalists for Fortune Magazine to photograph a series of images for an article that would feature the aviation industry.
Ten new silver-gelatin prints made from the original black-and-white negatives will be on display February 18 through March 17, 2012. Adams took over 200 black & white photographs in the Los Angeles area revealing the everyday life, businesses, and street scenes of the Southland.
What is unprecedented at this showing at the drkrm Gallery is that for the first time the limited-edition photographs will be offered for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Los Angeles Library.
The collection is from an archive discovered by Adams. He donated the whole batch to the Los Angeles Public Library for a token $125.
The collaboration efforts made by the drkrm, the Association of Edgar Varela Fine Art, the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection, and The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust are making this possible. Giving us a view of the 1940s, where the Los Angeles area had a population of 1.5 million. The cost of gas was 10 cents, and a new car was $700, something we wish we could see again.
