Open Road Films announces 'The Nut Job 2' for January 2016

Open Road Films is wasting no time in capitalizing on the success of their animated comedy “The Nut Job.” The distribution house this week announced that “The Nut Job 2” will be hitting theaters in January of 2016. The squirrel-centric flick has fared better than anticipated at the domestic box office, pulling in just over 40 million in two weeks of release.

A (literally) nutty caper about a squirrel helping his animal buddies rob a nut store, “The Nut Job” stars the vocal talents of Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Gabriel Iglesias, Katherine Heigl, and Liam Neeson. The film opened over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, heisting a third place finish with over 25 million, making it the biggest independent animated film opening of all time. It fared better than other high-profile releases(“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”, “Devil’s Due”), and with less television marketing.

“The Nut Job” was a collaboration between Redrover Co., Ltd, ToonBox Entertainment Ltd., and Gulfstream Pictures. Open Road Films CEO Tom Ortenberg and Redrover President and CEO Hoe-jin Ha made the announcement.

“It has been a pleasure working with the teams at Redrover, Toonbox and Gulfstream and we are delighted to re-team with them for ‘The Nut Job 2’”, said Ortenberg.

Beyond the announcement of its existence, very little information was given about the sequel, so it’s unclear whether director Peter Lepeniotis may return for the sequel. A sequel is certainly on it’s way, though. The official release date will be January 15, 2016.
