DOWNTOWN - Tampa’s Dragon Boat Races will take place in downtown Tampa’s Garrison Channel, May 1, 2010 and the Tampa Independent Business Alliance (TIBA) is forming a race team to participate in it and the 2011 World Dragon Boat Races (also hosted by Tampa).
Anyone can participate and practices are scheduled for:
• February 28, 10:30am-12pm
• March 28, 10:30am-12pm
• April 11, 12-1:30pm
The cost for everything, including practices, training, equipment and race day registration is $70 per person. Teams require 26 participants and will be filled on a first come first served basis.

FAST FACTS FOR FORMING A DRAGON BOAT TEAM
THE DRAGON BOAT:
• Sport stems from an ancient Chinese legend
• Each Dragon Boat is 42 feet long
• 10 rows seat 20 paddlers
• A steersperson uses a 9 foot oar as a rudder, standing in the stern
• A drummer sits in a seat at the bow, facing the crew
ROSTER:
• 20 paddlers (minimum of eight female paddlers must be in the boat at all times)
• 1 drummer
• 5 alternate paddlers
COST:
$1,750 team entry fee ($70 per person) includes:
• Entry to paddlers party with dinner and beverages
• Three practices
• Three mini regatta/fun paddle days
• Three races during the event
• Team tent in Athletes Village
PRACTICES:
• Include the basics of paddling, and the basics of racing
ATHLETE’S VILLAGE:
• Each registered team receives a tent in the Athlete’s Village in downtown's Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park
EQUIPMENT:
• Paddles, life vests, boats, drums and steerspersons will be provided to each team at practice and on the day of the race
• Teams that bring their own equipment must use the regulation equipment mandated by the International Dragon Boat Federation
RACE DAY:
• Each team will race in three heats
• The course is 500 meters in a straight line with five lanes
• Each team will have 60-90 minutes in between heats
