Op-ed: The Republican position on abortion

This week in the local elections here in Gainesville Georgia there was a run-off between two candidates for the 9th district congressional seat. On one side there was Martha Zoller, and on the other, was Doug Collins. Both are conservative.

In the weeks approaching the election I went out to check my mail one day, and of course, it was filled with the daily deluge of political flyers. In the midst of them all was a flyer from Doug Collins that made me sick. The message that Collins thought was so very important for conservatives to ponder was that he was against abortion and Martha was not—wow--Really? Is that the most pressing issue of the day Mr. Collins? I think not!

Take the issue of Todd Akin and his “Rape” gaffe. Is there anyone who has missed some of the asinine statements of the left recently? Like, for example, the recent ad from the Obama Political Action Committee stating (for all intents and purposes) that Romney killed Joe Soptic`s wife?

Personally I could care less, during the political nightmare we are all in, whether or not Martha Zoller or any other candidate is pro-life, or, what they think about contraception and rape. This nation is in the worst shape economically that I can remember in my lifetime, and I am 46 and have lived through several recessions. Now, let me digress and explain.

I am a conservative Christian. I do believe that abortion is murder and that it is wrong. I believe that even if a rape occurs the child should be delivered and put up for adoption if necessary. I also believe that sin is sin. I think that God Almighty sees no difference between abortion and murder; however, I also know he allows free will. This is the major issue I have with the conservative right wing of the Republican Party. They tell liberals not to use the police power of government to make them buy healthcare, and yet, they try to use the police power of government to push religious views about abortion.

I wonder how many women would vote Republican if they (Republicans) would leave abortion alone? Now hear me out; I am not saying I think abortion is right, or that anyone should ever get an abortion just to get rid of a problem. I think the only case abortion should be used is in a case where the baby is killing the mother for some medical reason. I think, rather, that conservative Christians should follow God`s lead and teach people moral truths while allowing them to decide for themselves.

What would happen if Christians spent more time teaching young people and young mothers about why abortion is immoral--rather than shouting about God, sin, and Hell? What if conservative Christians quit threatening to use the police power of government to force religious edicts down the throats of others and simply led by example? The last thing we (conservatives and Republicans) need to be doing as we approach this vital and life changing election in November is to run around talking about abortion!

My point in all of this is to let the law remain and leave women alone about abortion. Then, start a national campaign to teach the immoral realities of abortion and, for Christians, teach young men and women what Gods word says concerning this matter. Jesus led by example in all his ways. He walked with the sinner and taught them about the Father and about the Kingdom of Heaven. He told his followers to love their neighbors and to spread the good news. If Republicans and Christians would spend more time doing this, rather than pointing out the sins of others--imagine what might happen.

Barrack Obama could care less about abortion. He just knows he needs the female vote. I know this article has strong religious ties. I am not usually one to proselytize in my articles; however, this election cannot not be won on abortion; nevertheless, I do believe it could be lost on abortion. In the now famous words of the Clinton camp in the 1992 election—“It`s the economy stupid.”
