The Guardian UK has issued an apology for mistakenly “outing” actor Sir Patrick Stewart for being gay in an article meant to celebrate Ellen Page’s “coming out” earlier this month. They have also emended the column.

Patrick, 73, known for his work on television, movies and stage is most widely recognized for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (and its successor films), and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series. He has also be lauded for his many stage appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

While Stewart did portray a "flamboyant" interior decorator in the 1995 gay romantic comedy "Jeffrey," he is straight and has been married three times; first to Sheila Falconer (whom he divorced after 24 years of marriage in 1990), Wendy Neuss, one of the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation (whom he divorced after three years of marriage in 2003), and to current wife Sunny Ozell, who he married last September. Patrick also has two children from his first marriage, actor Daniel Stewart and daughter Sophia.

Although he is not gay, he is a “good friend of the LGBT community and strong supporter of equal rights for all, including marriage equality. He was also awarded the “Straight Ally of the Year Award” by PFAG in 2013.
