The Ontario Reign, back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, announced that 2012-13 Reign defenseman Eric Springer will be back with Ontario, left wing Garrett Klotz and rookie forward Cody Chikie have signed and will be joining the Reign's training camp.
Springer, 24, made his rookie debut with Ontario last season appearing in 28 games where he recorded his first professional point, an assist, on January 16, 2013 in Las Vegas and finished the regular season with a plus-minus rating of +11. Springer also appeared in two playoff games for the Reign; one against Utah and one against Idaho.
The Wrightstown, WI native completed a four year collegiate campaign at the University of Wisconsin where he earned 10 points (2g, 8a) in 84 games.
While playing junior hockey, Springer dressed for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL and was named to the second-team All-USHL and USHL Defensive Player of the Week. He led team's defensemen with eight goals and 31 points in 58 games played. Springer ranked sixth among defensemen in league scoring with 31 points (8g, 23a).
Klotz, 24, joins the Reign after spending the bulk of the 2012-13 season with the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL’s Eastern Conference where he tallied seven points (3g, 4a) in 35 games. He was called up to the Komets AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals for two games.
The Regina, Saskatchewan native has had plenty of experience in the AHL as he made his professional debut with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2008-09 for 36 games. The third round Philadelphia Flyers 2007 NHL Draft pick (#66 overall) remained in the Flyers system between the AHL and ECHL until 2012 when he played with Norfolk and Fort Wayne.
In 157 AHL games, Klotz has earned 11 points (4g, 7a); in 38 ECHL appearances, the winger posted seven points (3g, 4a). During the 2010-11 season, Klotz played 49 games under Jason Christie with the CHL’s Bloomington PrairieThunder where he earned a career-high 24 points (9g, 15a).
From 2005-08 Klotz played junior hockey in the WHL with the Red Deere Rebels and Saskatoon Blades.
Chikie, 21, comes from four full seasons in the WHL and one season, 2012-13, at the University of Lethbridge. In his college debut, Chikie posted five points (2g, 3a) in 17 games.
From 2009-12 the St. Albert, Alberta native played for the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) where he tallied 93 points (49g, 44a) in 186 games. Prior to that, Chikie was with the Saskatoon Blades from 2007-09 with a 20-game stint in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Sherwood Park Crusaders. In his two seasons with the Blades, the center posted four assists; he had three points (2g, 1a) with the Crusaders.
