Ontario maple syrup season taps into action north of Toronto GTA

The maple syrup producers are busy getting the sugar shacks ready for the first boil of sap over the next week or two. The weather this past week has been hovering around the freezing point and the sap has started to run.

In Ontario according to the weekly report by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food "It is important to understand that warming spring weather, tapping and the onset of sap flow may differ by two to three weeks across the province, the earliest being southwestern Ontario, while the latest areas are the north and northeast regions.The extended weather forecast indicates that good tapping conditions are expected later this week (and over the coming weekend (February 28-March 3) in many areas of southern Ontario."

A number of festivals are taking place during the month of March into April 2013.

Toronto area residents can select from a number of festivals and sugar bush tours starting this weekend where they can combine pristine spring forest walks and horse drawn sleigh or wagon rides into the sugar bush. A sample of upcoming festivals follow:

    Explore the sugar bush, take in a maple candy making session, or travel on a horse-drawn wagon ride.

    All day pancake breakfast available with a sampling of old and modern maple syrup harvesting. There will be live animal demonstration, orse drawn wagon rides, bannock over the open fire and Live folk music.

A number of resort destinations will also be hosting maple syrup events and festivals throughout the Ontario March Break (March 8-17).
