Online game streaming company Twitch grows to over 28 million viewers in Feb.

Since their recent launch in June of 2011 Twitch, an online video game streaming website, has established itself as a staple of the gaming community. March, 13 2013 the company announced their record breaking growth for the month of February.

Twitch measures their success by means of audience size, content creators and audience engagement. A look at a graph marking Twitch’s daily reach throughout 2012 shows a nearly straight increasing diagonal line. The statistics for Feb. show more than 600,000 unique Twitch broadcasters and over 28 million unique viewers. This works out to an average of over 1.5 hours of video watched per viewer per day.

CEO Emmet Sheer responded to the company’s success with a press release statement saying,

Twitch launched in June of 2011 and our growth ever since has exceeded even my expectations, which were not small. A year and a half later, the community of broadcasters and viewers has multiplied hundreds of percent. . . . We want to make broadcasting a standard piece of the gaming experience, and we’re starting to realize that goal.”

Already Twitch services have been integrated into the products of Electronic Arts, Activision, Ubisoft, and Sony Online Entertainment. The site has been used as a platform for charities to raise millions of dollars. This small San Francisco start-up has seen an amazing amount of growth over their short life.

This accomplishment makes it clear that video game streaming is not only a very viable business concept but a popular form of entertainment that gamers want. Twitch has continued to expand and update their services since their launch with new services like Twitch Turbo and inclusion in other popular games. It’s not far-fetched to assume in-game streaming will soon be incorporated into every game and platform. Congratulations Twitch on your record breaking growth.
