There are a lot of dating websites out there. With so many options, it is hard to decide which is right. Each targets a slightly different audience and specializes in presenting information in a different way. Many websites claim to offer a unique service of matching people based on profiles, but most of them do that as well as offer the ability to search other members in the database. Below is a list of general dating sites and the basics of what they offer.

This up and coming site allows members to view profiles for free but in order contact members, a paid membership is required. It is currently considered the number one matchmaking site for straight and gay relationships. Below is a list of dating websites which offer services to a general audience.

Membership is paid. The emphasis on this website is for those seeking long-term relationships, and originally they catered to a Christian demographic. There is a slightly higher age demographic of users over 45 on this site opposed to OkCupid and Match. Originally they would not allow homosexuals to use their website, but due to a court ruling, they now must and say they cater to a gay demographic. Despite this, many gays will not use this website.

Because this dating site requires paid membership to respond to messages, there are a higher number of employed members than free sites.

The difference between this dating site is that the emphasis is on setting up the first date as opposed to messaging, browsing, researching and spending time online. Another difference is that there is a section specifically for couples how want to hook up with other couples. This is a paid website.

A sister website of, many of the features are similar. This website is gay-friendly. It has a paid membership.

This is for long term relationships; married and separated individuals are denied membership. The website is open to gay and straight relationships. Membership is paid. Their boast is that their website is one of the only websites that have a 1:1 ratio of male to female members, however, there are other websites that also boast of the same factor.

Long-term and short-term relationship seekers are both welcome at this site. The membership is more expensive than most dating sites out there, however, women are allowed a free limited membership and there are three day trials available for free.

This is a free dating site, so there is a higher percentage of younger and unemployed members and some claim there are also more members in the artist/tech industry. Some people like the questionnaire based match rating, others don’t.

Plenty of Fish
This dating site is free and many people find the upgrade to paid membership is not needed. However, some people have reviewed the site as being lower in quality of potential matches.

This is not a dating website but many people use the personal ads section as though it were. Because it is free, there are people who use it since they lack an income, create fake profiles or never respond. No one monitors it so there are quite a few photos of genitalia. Craigslist is known for being a cheap hook-up service.
