May 23, 2011: From Harvard math majors analyzing OKCupid! to advice from cyber dating expert Julie Spira we are learning more each day about the world of online dating. The cleavage secret for getting more dates was revealed yesterday in Daily News & Analysis. But online dating is more than just a quick match, it is a process that we have learned about in my interviews with Julie Spira author of the best-selling The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online. This from the Harvard team
According to OkCupid, an 18-year-old woman with a cleavage shot in her profile gets 24% more contacts per month on average than more demure 18-year-olds.If she does it at age 32, that jumps to 79% more than her buttoned up peers.
But there is good news in the world of cleavage for older women as well. Satoshi Kanazawa, evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics was quoted in the article as saying that older women can compensate for the “decline in mate value.”
The compensation factor is well-known by those who have followed the lead of Samantha in Sex and the City – cleavage, cleavage, cleavage!
'It's bait,' Dr Peter Jonason of the University of South Alabama said. Now, secret online dating tips revealed by Harvard math majors
OK Cupid and OK Trends
OkTrends (blog.okcupid.com) is published by OkCupid founders (www.okcupid.com). The site is a free, online dating service that boasts of 7 million visitors each month.
From this gold mine of data the former math majors from Harvard “sort and sift, crunch and correlate, catching whatever nuggets of mating wisdom fall out.”
6 practice tips from Julia Spira, cyberdating expert
In an effort to keep women appraised on the dating and mating scene, I often talk with the well-known Princess of cyber-dating. This advice is from my Spring Fever interview with her.
Online profile
Create an irresistible online dating profile complete with a catchy screen name, terrific photos, and a bio interesting enough to pique curiosity.
Post photos
Some singles still don’t post photos. That would be like sending a resume to your dream employer and not providing your contact information. Often I see emails sent with the subject line blank. No subject equals no reply. It’s a competitive digital landscape, so you need to personalize your email to each person that you initiate contact with if you want to increase your chances of a reply.
Send a wink or a flirt
You really need to be proactive about your search and position your love life highest on the totem pole. That means be proactive and spend an hour every day writing to singles whose profiles interest you, or just dip a toe in and send a wink or a flirt.
Before a first date
She suggests you “Google him and check him or her out.” Spira advises determining someone’s actual status before the first date: that is, Married, Separated, or Divorce Pending.

Spira adds, “Trust your intuition. Your instincts are usually good. If someone keeps changing plans, suggests a late night date, or going to his place, take a rain check,” she cautions. “Better safe, than sorry.”
Give out your cell phone number and first name only. It’s too easy for a digital stranger to find out where you live if you give out your home number or email address.
During a first date
Leave the baggage behind. If you think there’s chemistry when you first meet don’t talk about your ex-wife or ex-husband or the number of dates you’ve been on lately. Focus on the one person sitting across the table from you. If your date asks you to talk about your previous marriage or divorce, change the subject. Only talk about what you are comfortable with on a first date.
Involve your friends. “Create a buddy system,” she explains, “and be certain you always tell a friend who you are going out with on a first date, second, and even third date. And check in.”
If you feel the slightest discomfort, get up and leave!
To improve chances for a second date
At the end of the first date, if you like the person, let him or her know and schedule a second date on the calendar. It will give both of you something to look forward to.
