They’re not only in it for the money.
Heck, last we heard, you had to pay Gail Zappa if you wanted to perform her late husband’s music anywhere. Remember singing “What’s the Ugliest Part of Your Body?” in the shower the other day? Mrs. Z is waiting for your check.
What a drag.
The group—featuring original Mothers of Invention members Napoleon Murphy Brock and Don Preston—recreated music from Zappa’s 1974 live album Roxy & Elsewhere on tour last year. The current outing finds the ensemble ripping through 1975’s One Size Fits All front-to-back, along with a few fan favorites and buried treasures from Bongo Fury, Uncle Meat, Overnite Sensation, and yes—We’re Only In It for the Money.
So Zappaphiles can expect to hear the adventurous “Sofa No. 1” and trippy travelogue “Inca Roads.” Perhaps some “Duke of Prunes,” “King Kong,” and “Plastic People.” Maybe even a little “Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance” or “Who Are the Brain Police?”
No matter Friday’s musical menu, concertgoers can bank on humorous, heady tunes played by nimble hands and glad hearts.
Napoleon and the Mothers have been touring Zappa’s music for over a decade now (the maestro himself died in 1993), respectfully rendering Frank’s both zany, satiric early work (Freak Out, Absolutely Free) and complex mid-career jazz / fusion pieces (Apostrophe, One Size Fits All) for audiences around the globe. They’ve jammed live with fellow former Mothers Roy Estrada and Bunk Gardner, filmed an historic show in Germany for Warner Classics, headlined numerous festivals the world over, and shared the stage with symphony orchestras.
Joining Napoleon and (keyboardist / electronics whiz Preston at the Beachland will be Christopher Garcia (drums, percussion), Dave Johnsen (bass, vocals), and Max Kutner (guitar vocals).
When it comes to performance, there’s no such thing as “easy” Zappa music. But singer / saxophonist Napoleon and company have the virtuosity and dedication of purpose requited to pull off accurate, note-for-note readings without once forgetting they’re having fun or that—to quote Zappa—“music is the best.”
