In a day and age when inhumanity and cruelty make up the majority of "news," it is a privilege to be able to share the story of a teen who is looking outside of himself to help ease the plight of homeless animals.
In 2011, then 11-year-old Sean Martin, kicked off the "Kids Adopt a Shelter," campaign.
Martin's initial focus was for donations for the Little Shelter in Long Island, N.Y., with a bigger goal in mind - to recruit one child from each state to collect donations for a local animal shelter.
The Kids Adopt a Shelter mission reads:
“To make sure every shelter, rescue and foster can keep animals comfortable while waiting to be adopted, with the help of fellow kids.”
Martin's organization is approaching an anniversary and today, his ambitions have grown. The now 13-year-old boy has a worldwide goal - he hopes to see every animal shelter, rescue and sanctuary, across the globe, represented by a "kid."
Currently, Martin and team member, Mary Tippin are collecting donations for The Little Shelter, Friends of Freddie Pet Rescue, FurBabies Rescue and the Break the Chain Program all based in Long Island, N.Y.
Donations are collected until Dec. 20, 2013.
Animal shelters need pet food, medicine, toys, blankets, cleaning supplies and more. Specific items can be found on their “Amazon Wish List."
“Kids Adopt a Shelter’s” most recent effort was an online auction that ended Sept. 22.
Half of the funds will be divided among the K.A.a.S. chapters to support their donation drives. Money was also donated to New York State Retriever Rescue and Operation OLIVERS, to pay for medical bills for a sick dog.
Another “Kids Adopt a Shelter” event was their first Pet Adoption Fashion Show on July 27, 2013. It had had family-friendly activities and Rescues and shelters walked their adoptable pets down the runway.
It resulted in 15 adoptions and raised nearly $1,000. Other efforts include seasonal and emergency donation drives such as for Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornadoes.
