Families grow stronger through shared experiences. A great idea for a family field trip is the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. If you have a family of history buffs, you don’t want to miss this destination. This is the only museum in the United States that offers a balanced view of the War Between the States. The focus is on the war’s effect on people, the best way to experience history.
A one-tank trip, the museum is approximately 11/2 hours away from Allentown. Its hours of operation are Mon-Tues and Thur-Sat: 10am-5pm, Wed: 10am-8pm, Sun: 12pm-5pm.
The museum is set up so that as you and your family walk through the exhibits you experience the events of the Civil War in chronological order. Your tour self guided tour will begin with A House Divide where you will learn about the incidents and issues that led to the outbreak of the war. The raid on Harper’s Ferry is very well done. The next display is an emotional look at slavery complete with a dramatic depiction of a slave auction done with life-sized mannequins. The firing on Fort Sumter is followed by the recruiting and training of the armies. Visitors "hear" from characters who share their personal stories. The museum houses a world-class collection of weapons and firearms. The largest diorama in the building presents a life-like picture of how soldiers passed their time in camp. Civil War music, women’s roles in the war, and an exhibit on medicine are also included.

The museum recommends that you leave 2-4 hours for your visit. My family enjoyed the museum for the entire day. The grounds of the museum are beautiful and overlook the city of Harrisburg.
The National Civil War Museum offers a special Family Pass. $35 admits 2 adults and 2 children. On February 18, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. the Hershey Company is sponsoring a free community day and admission is free to all the galleries. There is also a schedule of special events planned.
