One suspect was killed and two others are on the run after a carjacking Thursday afternoon in south Cherokee County.
But investigators still aren’t sure what actually caused the man's death.
The carjacking occurred near a subdivision on Ga. 92, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
The three men forced the car owner into the back seat where he stayed with one of the suspects while the other two sat in the front seats, spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.
“According to the victim, one of the suspects was hitting him in the head with a firearm and the gun discharged,” Lt. Baker said. “Moments later the car left the roadway and struck a tree.”
Two of the suspects ran from the wreck on Ga. 92, just west of Wade Green Road. Deputies arrived to find the third suspect dead at the scene. They later discovered that the man had a gunshot wound to the back, Lt. Baker said.
“The cause of death is still unknown and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday,” Lt. Baker said Thursday. So far, deputies have not released the dead man's name.
The vehicle’s owner was transported to Kennestone Hospital where he was being treated for head injuries, Lt. Baker said.
His condition was not readily available Thursday.
