During President Obama's State of the Union Address he called out to the Senate and Congress, in clear language, for help in solving America's health care crisis.
“If anyone...,” Obama said, “has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know.”
Well, someone spoke up. Minnesota Senator John Marty, who is also a Democratic candidate for governor, has sent the president a letter pushing for a single-payer health plan much like bill he authored for his home state. The bill Senator Marty proposes would, in his belief, cover all of the problems President Obama outlined in the SOTU speech.
Bring Down the Premiums: the premiums of Senator Marty's Minnesota Health Plan would be based on ability to pay. So everyone would be able to afford care.
Bring Down the Deficit: Affordable health care would result in more preventative health care measures and, delivered efficiently, would save the federal government hundreds of billions of dollars, and even more for states.
Strengthen Medicare for Seniors: It would cover prescription drugs, it would cover all medical needs, as well as the freedom to choose their doctors. And this would go for everyone, not just the elderly.
Stop Insurance Company Abuses: No “preexisting conditions,” no underwriting, no denial of coverage, no “out of network” problems. 'Nuff said.
So...a single-payer, Universal health care system. Does that answer all of your questions, Mr. President?
