Most Americans are likely unfamiliar with the name Kasabian. The British band who are very well known in England and beyond have somehow managed to not make it big in the US yet. Kasabian are bonafide superstars everywhere else and seem on the cusp of finally cracking the elusive U.S market just like fellow British bands like Muse have done in recent years. Kasabian rocked David Letterman last week and it's only a matter of time before this band with their commanding presence on and off stage headline U.S. music festivals much like they've done for years abroad. The band who formed in Leicestershire in 1997 could finally get more attention in America when they hit the road in support of their brilliant 2011 CD Velociraptor! The headlining tour starts on March 10 in Denver and the band will make a stop in DC on their tour when they play the 930 Club on March 20. What better way to welcome in or more appropriately rock in in the first day of Spring then by seeing one of England’s most electrifying and best bands live.
Kasabian combines a little electronic, neo-psychedelic, funk, indie and alternative rock and even a bit of rap for one eclectic and distinctive sound. Even though people try to compare them to other bands like Oasis or Stone Roses they have a sound that is all their own and they’re impossible to classify and categorize. Lead singer Tom Meighan is a charismatic and dynamic front man with an unforgettable voice that spends almost as much time rapping as he does singing. Equally impressive are guitarist/backing and occasional lead vocalist and primary songwriter Sergio Pizzorno; bassist Chris Edwards; drummer Ian Matthews and guitarist Jason "Jay" Mehler who round out the remarkable lineup and help produce the completely unique and mighty sound that has made the band so beloved throughout the world.
Kasabian may be best know in the United States for songs like “Club Foot,” and “LSF” from their self-titled debut CD which got moderate airplay on some rock stations. But the band has actually released four CDs: Kasabian (2004), Empire (2006), West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009), and Velociraptor! (2011). But in the UK, Kasabian are huge and the proof is in the awards. They have won numerous awards such as Best British Band at the Brit awards (2010); Best Album (2009) and Best Live Act In The World Today (2010) from Q magazine; Best Live Band (2007), Band Album and Best Album Artwork from NME and Song of The Year for the song “Fire” (2010) and have been nominated for countless others. But Kasabian aren’t a band that make songs for critical success, awards or radio airplay but instead weave clever lyrics sometimes delivered at a rock fire pace; thumping, surging beats and compelling vocals to make all their songs so unusual and memorable. Awards seem to just be icing on the cake for these rebels of rock music. Then add to their amazing songs their energetic and rockin' live shows and this is one band that is a can’t miss and is a personal pick for the must see show of March.
Hopefully DC music fans shows up to discover the secret that the rest of the world has already discovered when Kasabian plays the 930 Club on March 20th. Tickets are still available for the show and are $22 and can be purchased here: http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/80561 But below are a few of the band’s more well known songs from each of their four CDs to help everyone familiarize themselves with the band and hopefully encourage everyone to go check out one of the best bands that most people in America have never heard of.
