One killed, several injured after two vehicles collide in Cobb County

One person was killed and several others wounded when two vehicles collided late Saturday afternoon in Cobb County.

The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. on Hillcrest Drive near Wilhelmina Drive in Austell, according to Cobb County police.

Investigators said a blue 2011 Hyundai Sonata was travelling northbound on Hillcrest Drive in the southbound travel lane at the same time, a tan 2001 Nissan Quest was travelling southbound in the southbound lane on Hillcrest Drive.

“The driver of the Nissan attempted to steer to the left to avoid a collision and the driver of the Hyundai attempted to steer to the right to avoid a collision,” police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman said. “The two vehicles collided in the northbound travel lane.”

The 47-year-old Sonata’s driver, Mr. William Cofield, of Austell, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died of his injuries, Officer Bowman said.

The 37-year-old driver of the Quest, Mr. Bertin Vargas, also of Austell, sustained non life-threatening injuries along with his 26-year-old passenger, Mrs. Laura Vargas, Officer Bowman said.

Both were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. There were four young children in the vehicle who were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for non life-threatening injuries.

Police said no charges are expected to be filed as a result of this collision.
