A passenger was killed and the driver arrested after a high-speed wreck in a stolen vehicle Tuesday morning in DeKalb County.

Police said Mr. Sterling Shabazz, who according to media reports was armed with a gun, was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, theft by receiving motor vehicle, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving on a suspended license.

Around 10 a.m., an officer spotted a Toyota Camry leaving an apartment complex off Memorial Drive at a high rate of speed, according to DeKalb County police.

“We think something transpired at the complex and they were fleeing the scene,” Capt. Fore said.
Suspicious, the officer followed and a short time later came upon the scene of the crash, Capt. Fore said.

The Toyota had been driving erratically on U.S. 78 and had forced several vehicles off the road, according to media reports.

The vehicle had crossed the median, went airborne and struck a tree near East Ponce De Leon Avenue ramp, the captain said.

The officer provided aid to an unidentified female passenger and took that passenger into custody, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The officer also called for backup to search for the driver, who had run into the nearby woods. He was later taken into custody after a search by dozens of officers.

Mr. Michael Holt, 45, was critically injured and later died en route to the hospital, police spokeswoman Ms. Mekka Parish told the AJC.

Investigators later determined that the car was reported stolen out of DeKalb County, Capt. Fore said.
