July 13, 2011 - Take a musical journey through Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and beyond, exploring the romance, emotion, and passion of the Spanish Guitar, on August 5 at The Ford Amphitheatre. Reflecting the new generation of Spanish composers, guitar maestro David Maldonado debuts Noche de Pasion (Night of Passion) – 100 Years of Spanish Guitar, featuring original Spanish compositions and re-worked pieces dating back to the early 1900s by legendary composers Geronimo Jimenez, Sabicas (Godfather of Flamenco), and even selections by Agustin Barrios.
David Maldonado’s Noche de Pasion features everything from a solo guitar, to a string quartet, to a full band of highly skilled musicians. These exceptional players, along with a cast of dancers, poetry, and the beautiful outdoor theatre known as the famous FORD, combine for an evening celebrating the rich history of the Spanish guitar and the deep emotions evoked by its music.
David Maldonado was born in Mexico and brought up in the tradition of the guitar. He was a selected student of the Royal Family of the Guitar as knighted by the King of Spain, Los Romeros. David has released six albums worldwide and has performed concerts from Paris to Tokyo. Few guitarists can execute David’s mastery of the many styles of Spanish guitar; flamenco, classical, and modern, including difficult styles of rasqueado (a precise rapid strumming pattern using all the fingers of the right hand) and picados (extremely fast guitar scales).
Joining David are the exquisite dancers Katie Miller, Christina Hall and Yvette Tucker. Katie Miller (Dancing with the Stars) has performed all over the world with artists such as Liza Minelli, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Usher, and many others. Cristina Hall (Artistic Director/performer in El Sonido del Silencio) is a renowned flamenco dancer who has studied with the acclaimed Eva Yerbabuena, Farruquito, Antonio Canales, and currently teaches and performs Flamenco throughout Europe. Yvette Tucker (Ovation award winner) has danced at the Grammys with Shakira, Wyclef Jean, Tony Bennett, Elton John, and Placido Domingo. These performers, as well as the other phenomenally talented musicians were handpicked by David Maldonado to accurately demonstrate the growth and change of the Spanish Guitar styles and traditions spanning from the early 1900’s to present day.
David Maldonado’s Noche de Pasion – 100 Years of the Spanish Guitar takes place Friday, August 5, 2011 at 8:30 PM (doors open at 7:30 pm; grounds open at 6:30 pm). Tickets are $35 general admission. Limited VIP tickets are $100 and include a meet and greet, tapas, wine and beer and a private concert. The Ford Amphitheatre is located at 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, CA 90068, just off the 101 Hollywood Freeway across from the Hollywood Bowl and south of Universal Studios. The grounds open two hours before show time for picnicking. The Ford offers a number of dining options: a variety of food and beverages is available on site and box dinners for evening events may be ordered in advance. Patrons are welcome to bring their own food and drink.
