One Direction won the two awards that the group was nominated for at the 2014 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The awards won by One Direction were Favorite Music Group and Favorite Song (for "Story of My Life"). The 2014 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards (hosted by Mark Wahlberg) took place place March 29 at the University of Southern California's Galen Center in Los Angeles. Nickelodeon telecast the ceremony from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. EST/PST.
One Direction did not attend the ceremony, but the group gave a short, prerecorded acceptance speech by video.
One Direction's Liam Payne said in the speech, "Thank you so, so much for the Nickelodeon Favorite Song award, and thank you to everyone who voted for us. Massively appreciated."
One Direction's Harry Styles added, "We can't believe we won Favorite Music Group. Thank you so much."
Payne continued, "We're really sorry we can't be with you. We're in London rehearsing for our new tour."
Styles concluded, "Thank you so much for voting for us. It means a lot. Thank you."
For the U.K. version of the 2014 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, One Direction is nominated for U.K. Favorite Band and U.K. Favorite Fan Family. The winners for the 2014 U.K. Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards will be announced on March 30, 2014.
[March 30, 2014 update: One Direction won both awards.]
As previously reported, One Direction and "X Factor" executive producer Simon Cowell were among the prize winners at the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. One Direction won the awards for Favorite Music Group and Favorite Song (for "What Makes You Beautiful"). Cowell won the prize for Favorite Villain.
One Direction, Cowell and some of the show's other winners were not at the ceremony and did not provide any prerecorded acceptance speeches. One Direction had two concerts in Birmingham, England, on the same date as the awards show. Cowell was busy with "Britain's Got Talent" (he's a judge/executive producer on the show), and he was traveling back and forth between the U.K. and the U.S.
Cowell was One Direction's "X Factor" mentor when he was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. After One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, Cowell signed One Direction to Syco Music, the record company that he co-owns with Sony Music. One Direction has since become the biggest-selling act worldwide to emerge from "The X Factor."
In addition, Nickelodeon in the U.K. had its own categories for the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. One Direction won the prize for Favorite U.K. Band. The other nominees in the category were Lawson, Little Mix and The Wanted.
"The X Factor" U.K. lost out on winning Favorite U.K. TV Show to "House of Anubis." The other nominees in the category were "Doctor Who" and "Wolfblood."
Olly Murs (who came in second place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2009) was nominated for Favorite U.K. Male Artist, but he lost to Ed Sheeran. The other nominees in the category were Conor Maynard and Labrinth.
One Direction performed "What Makes You Beautiful" at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in Los Angeles. At the time, One Direction was not eligible for any awards at that ceremony because One Direction's music had not yet been released in the U.S. during the eligibility period.
