One Direction has reportedly signed a three-year deal requiring all five members of the group to stay together and to deliver a new album every year within the next three years.
An unnamed source told The Sun in an article published on January 8, 2013: “It’s a really clever contract that the boys have signed up to. It means they have a real incentive to tough it out and stick together. The formal length is for 36 months and an album a year — but the clever part is they get the big pay day after the three years. If one of them walks away before then, then all five miss out on the money. They don’t miss out on a few quid either, we are talking millions. They all get on really well, but it would be the kind of deal that would see them through the worst aggro possible.”
One Direction was created on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, when Simon Cowell and other decision makers put five rejected solo-singer contestants together into a group. The five members of One Direction are Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, whose current ages range from 18 to 21.
Cowell was One Direction's mentor when he was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K., and One Direction came third place on the show in 2010. Cowell signed One Direction to Syco Music, the record company that he co-owns with Sony Music.
Since then, One Direction has become the biggest-selling worldwide act to emerge from "The X Factor," by having No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries. By the end of 2012, One Direction had sold 18 million albums, singles and DVDs worldwide, according to Sony Music. However, the group makes most of its money through merchandising and touring.
One Direction's two albums so far are "Up All Night" and "Take Me Home." If this information about One Direction's Sony Music deal is correct, then One Direction fans can expect the group to have a new album out in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
One Direction is spending most of 2013 on a world tour, but the group should have a new album out by November or December. The tour will be featured in a One Direction 3-D documentary that is due to be released in cinemas on August 30, 2013. Oscar-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock is directing the movie. Cowell and Spurlock are two of the movie's producers.
One Direction is managed by Modest! Management, which also represents "X Factor" U.K. alumni JLS, Olly Murs, Leona Lewis and Little Mix.
