One Direction is turning out to be the hottest phenomenon in the entertainment world of this era. The British band's Midnight Memories was just named the top seller internationally in 2013, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Aug. 1, 2014. The album sold 4 million copies in just six weeks.
The British Phonographic Industry cited One Direction's album Midnight Memories as the top selling album in the world in 2013. Following its release on Nov. 25, there were 4 million copies of the album sold worldwide in just five weeks. This was One Direction's third studio album. An astonishing 685,000 copies of Midnight Memories were sold in the U.K. alone.
The overnight amazing success of One Direction was also due to the group's sellout world tour "Take Me Home", which grossed over $100 million. In the same year, their first concert film "One Direction: This Is Us" earned $67 million at the box office.
With One Direction's success leading the way for acts from the U.K., they have now held the top spot for biggest selling albums for six of the last seven years reports BBC. Last year, British acts accounted for one in eight albums sold. British Phonographic Institute spokesman Gennaro Castaldo says this phenomenal achievement says a great deal about the popularity of British music across the entire world.
