One Direction's third album, "Midnight Memories," is the No. 1 best-selling artist albums of 2013 in the U.K., according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), whose rankings of the top-selling albums and singles in the U.K. were reported by the Official Charts Company.
According to the Official Charts Company, "Midnight Memories" (which was released worldwide on Nov. 25, 2013) sold 685,000 copies in the U.K. in 2013, with 237,000 of those copies sold in the U.K. the album's first week on sale.
One Direction's Liam Payne told OfficialCharts.com: “This tops an amazing year for us! We're so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of. We'd like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us.”
One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010 and has since become the biggest-selling act to emerge from "The X Factor." The group's members (Harry Styles, Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan) originally auditioned for "The X Factor" U.K. as solo singers, but they were rejected by the show as solo singers and put together in a group instead.
All of One Direction's three albums so far ("Up All Night," "Take Me Home" and "Midnight Memories") have been No. 1 hits in numerous countries.
One Direction's second album, "Take Me Home" (which was released in November 2012), was the No. 22 best-selling artist album of 2013 in the U.K.
One Direction also closed out 2013 ranked at No. 1 on the U.K. Music DVD charts for documentary "One Direction: This Is Us," which had been released in cinemas worldwide earlier that year.
Meanwhile, several other "X Factor" stars had albums ranked in the Top 40 of the best-selling artists albums of 2013 in the U.K.
Olly Murs' third U.K. album, "Right Place Right Time," was ranked at No. 5. The album was released in the U.K. in November 2012 and had U.K. sales of 623,000 in 2013 and 1.9 million total. Murs came in second place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2009.
Gary Barlow, who is a founding member of Take That and a former "X Factor" U.K. judge, had the No. 9 best-selling album of 2013 in the U.K. with his third solo album, "Since I Met You Last," which was released in November 2013. Barlow was a judge on "The X Factor" U.K. from 2011 to 2013.
James Arthur, the winner of "The X Factor" U.K. in 2012, was ranked at No. 30 for his self-titled album, which was released in November 2013.
Meanwhile, Murs and One Direction had singles that were ranked in the Top 40 of the biggest-selling singles of 2013 in the U.K.
According to the Official Charts Company, Murs' "Dear Darlin'" was the No. 20 single of 2013 in the U.K., while One Direction's "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)" was No. 24. "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams was ranked at No. 1.
