On December 3, 2012, One Direction performed a milestone concert at New York City's Madison Square Garden and celebrated with close friend Ed Sheeran, who joined One Direction on stage for One Direction's "Little Things," a song that Sheeran co-wrote. Sheeran was the opening act for the concert, which was sold out months in advance but a limited number of tickets were released on the evening of the show. The concert, which was One Direction's last full-length concert of 2012, was also Webcast live on Ustream.
Other than Sheeran joining One Direction on stage, the concert had the same set list and format as the concerts that One Direction performed at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on November 30 and December 1, 2012.
One Direction is the biggest act to emerge from "The X Factor" and the first "X Factor" alum to headline a concert at Madison Square Garden. (One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010.)
After the Madison Square Garden concert, One Direction's Liam Payne tweeted: "What a night! I had soooo much fun! Thank you to everyone who came to see us and everyone of our fans who support us! I love you loads."
One Direction's Niall Horan tweeted: "Wow, madison square garden, thank you soo much! It was the best night of our lives! Thank you thank you thank you ! #1DinMSG ... Goin t sleep! Chat tomorrow! Still can't believe we just played @thegarden ! Thank you."
There were many false reports in the media that Taylor Swift (who is dating One Direction's Harry Styles) was going to duet with One Direction at the concert. But as I already reported, that duet was not going to happen because sources said that Swift did not want to take any attention away from One Direction at this important concert and she just wanted to enjoy a night off from work. Even if she wanted to join One Direction on stage for a song, there wasn't enough time for them to rehearse together.
Earlier that evening, Swift had attended Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights' Ripple of Hope gala, where she was honored with the Ripple of Hope Award. (Swift dated Conor Kennedy, the eldest son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., from May to October 2012. Conor was not at the event.) After attending the gala at the Marriott Marquis hotel in midtown Manhattan, she went to One Direction's Madison Square Garden concert which is only about 10 blocks away from the hotel.
After the concert, One Direction partied with family members, friends, girlfriends and business associates at the Hudson Hotel. Sheeran and Swift were among the party attendees.
Styles and Swift arrived separately at the party, but inside the party, they were very close, and they left the party together. It was obvious that she was his date for the party.
One Direction members Payne and Louis Tomlinson arrived at the party together, and One Direction's Zayn Malik and Niall Horan arrived together. Malik's girlfriend Perrie Edwards arrived separately, as did Tomlinson's girlfriend Eleanor Calder.
Danielle Peazer, who dated Payne for two years before they broke up in September 2012, was also at the party. Payne and Peazer are apparently back together since they were seen holding hands and going on dates while they have been in New York City. Although Payne and Peazer have not publicly commented on the current status of their relationship, it was obvious that she was his date for the party.
Inside the party, the One Direction couple that was showing the most public displays of affection (hugging, etc.) were Malik and Edwards. Horan had fun doing some karaoke on stage with Styles and Swift. Songs from Backstreet Boys and One Direction were among the karaoke tunes that they performed. Although Horan had some close female friends at the party, he was acting single, so he got a lot of attention from women.
But for the most part, the guys in One Direction have been "coupled up" while in New York City. On December 2, Payne and Peazer, Malik and Edwards, and Tomlinson and Calder went on a "triple date" when they all went to see the Broadway show "Elf."
Swift and Styles are not publicly commenting about the status of their relationship, but they went on a highly publicized date in New York City's Central Park on December 2, 2012. There are numerous paparazzi photos all over the Internet of Styles and Swift together on this date, which included the couple visiting the Central Park Zoo. Swift and Styles also had dinner together, which was a date that paparazzi didn't get to photograph.
While in New York City this week, One Direction will get up and close and personal with fans on December 4 during a One Direction fan convention.
On December 7, One Direction has three major appearances:
- An invitation-only acoustic show and Q&A at SiriusXM headquarters for SiriusXM's Hits 1 channel
- A performance and interview on "Late Show With David Letterman" at the Ed Sullivan Theatre
- Radio station Z100's all-star Jingle Ball concert at Madison Square Garden
Other acts in the Jingle Ball lineup are Sheeran, Swift, Justin Bieber, Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd, Ne-Yo, fun., B.o.B, Jason Mraz, and The Wanted. One Direction and The Wanted have been feuding, so people are waiting to see what will happen when the two groups are in the same venue.
