The members of One Direction took up the top five spots in PeerIndex's 2013 list of Great Britain's most influential tweeters. The rankings were announced on Oct. 31, 2013. One Direction's Liam Payne was ranked No. 1, followed by One Direction members Harry Styles (No. 2), Niall Horan (No. 3), Louis Tomlinson (No. 4) and Zayn Malik (No. 5).
Rounding out the Top 10 are Ed Sheeran (No. 6), David Cameron (No. 7), Piers Morgan (No. 8), Caitlin Moran (No. 9) and Ricky Gervais (No. 10). The list ranks a total of 140 celebrities who are on Twitter. (One Direction's Horan is Irish, but he lives in London. One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010.)
Payne (who is the member of One Direction who is the most likely to follow fans on Twitter) reacted to his No. 1 ranking with this tweet: "I just read this and I can't believe it how does this even happen http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/twitter/10416649/Britains-most-inf... … if I'm influential the words in trouble. Honestly don't know why you guys listen I try my best to say good stuff and help people I hope I do but thank you for believing in me."
Other "X Factor" stars who made it on the list are "X Factor" creator/executive producer Simon Cowell (No. 12), Olly Murs (No. 15), Jahmene Douglas (No. 49), Marvin Humes of JLS (No. 52), James Arthur (No. 56), Aston Merrygold of JLS (No. 64), Oritsé Williams of JLS (No. 86), Cher Lloyd (No. 104), Ella Henderson (No. 117) and Frankie Cocozza (No. 126).
On "The X Factor" U.K., Murs came second place in 2009, Douglas came in second place in 2012, JLS came in second place in 2008, Arthur came in first place in 2012, Lloyd came in fourth place in 2010, Henderson came in sixth place in 2012, and Cocozza came in seventh place in 2011 before he was disqualified from the show after admitted that he used cocaine when he was an "X Factor" contestant.
And it's not just the members of One Direction who have a big influence on Twitter. Some of One Direction's associates do too, according to PeerIndex, which ranked Tomlinson's girlfriend Eleanor Calder at No. 27 and One Direction stylist Lou Teasdale at No. 59.
PeerIndex explained how the rankings were tallied: "PeerIndex analyzed more than 10 billion tweets from more than 150 million active Twitter users using PiQ, our social audience technology. We then filtered out all tweeters based outside of the UK; and then modelled the patterns of influence amongst Twitter users in the UK. We used PiQ to report a context-specific score of their influence, the UK π score (UK Pi Score) – tweeters’ influence only counted when they influenced other people in the UK."
