In a case of people twisting someone's words to create controversy where there is none to find, One Direction singer Liam Payne has been attacked by various special interest groups for a tweet he sent to Willie Robertson of "Duck Dynasty." According to The Hollywood Reporter on Jan. 20, many people have claimed that his tweet means he supports the homophobic comments by Phil Robertson.
Never mind the fact that Willie Robertson, the person that Payne sent his tweet to, had nothing to do with his father's words. The fact they are related apparently means the world is supposed to hate the entire family.
Payne tweeted to Willie after watching an episode of "Duck Dynasty" and sent his love, saying that he has huge respect for their business success and the family values they hold. However, many people jumped on the hate bandwagon, including activist Tyler Oakley, who tweeted to his over 1.8 million followers that he is confused and disappointed by the comments.
To his credit, Oakley later went back to Twitter and admitted that he misinterpreted the comments by Liam Payne, but not before battle lines were drawn. Numerous people online struck out at Payne, saying he supports homophobia since he liked "Duck Dynasty" while others have sent death threats to Oakley.
Both men have backed off and walked away from Twitter for the time being until things settle down. However, this is the danger of jumping into a situation before knowing all the facts. Just because the One Direction singer likes "Duck Dynasty," it doesn't mean he supports the ideology of one of the cast members.
