One Direction‘s third album, "Midnight Memories," is officially #1 in the United States. According to Billboard, the album sold 546,000 copies in the first week, which is up a bit from last year’s album "Take Me Home" which sold 540,000 copies in its first week and and up from their debut album, "Up All Night," which sold 176,000 copies in its first week. The news was announced by Billboad and Nielsen SoundScan on Wednesday (December 4).

Even more impressive, with "Midnight Memories" debuting at #1, One Direction becomes the first group to have their first three albums debut at #1 since The Monkees in 1967.

Further, One Direction is only the third pop group to score multiple half-million sales week since 1991. Only fellow boy bands ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys have accomplished it this before.

One Direction knocks Eminem’s album “The Marshall Mathers LP 2″ down from the top spot, that album sold 199,000 copies. Garth Brook's new box set came in third on this weeks Billboard 200 with 164,000 copies sold.

As reported on Sunday, "Midnight Memories" also went #1 in the U,K, last week where it became their fastest selling album ever selling 237,000 copies in that country and also became the U,K.’s fastest selling album of the year.
