One Direction heartthrobs to appear on ‘Sesame Street’

It looks like “Sesame Street” will feature some big guest stars for its upcoming new season. One Direction singers Liam Payne and Harry Styles will team up with Bert, the usually fussy Muppet who’s known for his neurotic behavior, for a unique rendition of the ABCs, according to an article posted on Wednesday by People.

The British boy band heartthrobs, who hit the big screen last summer with their documentary movie “This Is Us,” will appear on the 45th season of the PBS children's program this fall, along with their band mates Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. The teen idols will also perform a parody version of their hit song "What Makes You Beautiful,” titled “What Makes You Useful.”

One Direction won’t be the only big name recording stars to turn up on “Sesame Street.” An article posted last fall by The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Emmy winning children's show will also feature guest appearances by UK singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, as well as popular rapper duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Sheeran will sing an original empowerment song about life at home and at school, while Mackelmore and Lewis will perform a G-rated version of their smash hit song “Thrift Shop.” (Macklemore will transform into “Mucklemore” for the bit, which features Muppet grouch Oscar in a trash-themed segment.) Past musicians who’ve appeared on the iconic kiddie show include Elvis Costello, Katy Perry, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash, Usher, Norah Jones, and R.E.M., who sang a ditty called “Furry Happy Monsters” modeled after their hit “Shiny Happy People” way back in Season 30.

In addition to the impressive lineup of popular pop stars, the new season of “Sesame Street” will feature guests like comedian Tina Fey, “30 Rock" stars Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer, and a slew of "What’s the Word on the Street" cameos from big stars such as Taye Diggs, Zach Braff, Claire Danes, Ian McKellen and Zachary Quinto.

The celebrating has already started for “Sesame Street’s” big 45th anniversary. Last month, the long running PBS kiddie program was honored at a gala event in New York City. The New York Daily News reported that popular characters Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, The Count, Abby Cadabby, Zoe, Murray, Rosita and Telly were among the guests of honor at the show’s 45th anniversary celebration held at the ritzy Cipriani restaurant. Big name guests like Barbara Walters partied with the fuzzy group of friends.

“Sesame Street” will kick off its 45th season on September 15 on PBS.
