One Direction, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears: 2013 People's Choice Awards no-shows

"X Factor" stars One Direction, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears have been nominated for prizes at the 2013 People's Choice Awards, but they won't be attending the ceremony, which takes place at Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles on January 9. On January 8, 2013, the People's Choice Awards released the final list of confirmed celebrities who will be at the show. One Direction, Lovato and Spears are not on the list. CBS will have the U.S. telecast of the show at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. The nominations were announced on November 15, 2012.

One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. Lovato and Spears are judges on "The X Factor" U.S., but there have been rumors that they will be fired. Spears, Lovato, their representatives and "X Factor" spokespeople have not commented on these rumors.

As previously reported, One Direction has four nominations, Lovato has three and Spears has one.

"The X Factor" U.S. is nominated for Favorite Competition TV Show.

(All the "X Factor"-related nominations are listed at the end of this article.)

One Direction is expected to win at least one award, but the group is in London rehearsing for its 2013 world tour. One Direction will have a prerecorded acceptance speech if One Direction wins any of the awards.

There was no explanation given for why Lovato and Spears won't attend, but it is common knowledge in the entertainment industry that the People Choice Award winners are told in advance that they won in order to increase their motivation to attend the ceremony. That is why many of the nominees who lose don't bother to attend, unless they are presenters and performers at the show. Another common reason why nominees don't attend (even if they win) is because they have work commitments elsewhere. Unlike other awards shows that are known for having surprise appearances, the People's Choice Awards leave almost no room for surprises.

At the 2012 People's Choice Awards, Lovato won the prize for Favorite Pop Artist, and she performed her hit "Give Your Heart a Break."

Voting for most of the categories was open from November 15, 2012 until December 13, 2012 at http://www.peopleschoice.com/pca/vote/votenow.jsp. However, five of the categories will still be open to voting up until the night of the show:

  • Favorite Movie Fan Following
  • Favorite Music Fan Following
  • Favorite TV Fan Following
  • Favorite New TV Comedy
  • Favorite New TV Drama

Based on which celebrities are scheduled to attend, it looks like "The Voice," "Supernatural," "The Vampire Diaries," "The Big Bang Theory" and "Glee" will be among the TV winners. "The Hunger Games" and "The Avengers" will likely be among the winners in the movie categories. Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift will probably win at least one award in the music categories.

Speaking of Swift, she's probably relieved that One Direction won't be at the show since she just broke up with One Direction's Harry Styles on January 4, 2013. The former couple first went public with their romance in mid-November 2012, but they had a brief "secret" fling in April 2012.

Although Swift and Styles have not publicly commented on their relationship, sources have told the media that the relationship ended in January 2013 for the the same reason why it ended in April 2012: Swift wanted a commitment that was more serious than Styles wanted it to be, and Swift was jealous of other women she thinks are rivals for his affections. Other people have speculated the Swift/Styles relationship was fabricated as a publicity stunt.
