One Direction is planning to open a chain of cafes worldwide, according to a "Daily Star" report published on Feb. 4, 2014. The cafes, which will feature One Direction merchandise for sale, is set to have their first location open in Shibuya, Japan, on Feb. 11, 2014.
If business at the cafe in Japan does well, more One Direction cafes are being planned for London, New York City, Paris and Berlin. It's also very likely that Australia (probably in Sydney) will also get a One Direction cafe.
An unnamed source told the "Daily Star:" “This could become the lads’ version of Planet Hollywood. That chain was backed by stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger when it launched in 1991. The cafes will be very child-friendly for younger fans and they’re sure to be stocked up with lots of 1D merchandise."
One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010, and has since become the world's biggest-selling act to emerge from "The X Factor." The group has had No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in many countries. One Direction's 2014 world tour of stadiums is expected to be the highest-grossing concert tour of the year. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry recently named One Direction the biggest-selling global act of 2013.
Most of One Direction's moneymaking comes from touring and merchandise sales. During the group's 2012 and 2013 world tours, One Direction "pop up stores" (stores that exist for a limited time) opened in several locations around the world. The One Direction "pop up stores" consisted entirely of One Direction merchandise.
Unlike the "pop up stores," the One Direction cafes will be open throughout the entire year. How long they will stay open after the first few years will depend on how long One Direction's popularity will last.
One Direction's fourth album is being planned for release in late 2014. The album's title, songs and release date are to be announced.
