One man was shot to death and another wounded in a shootout Tuesday outside a CVS in northwest Atlanta. And police on Wednesday said the shooting appeared to be drug-related.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday identified the deceased as Michael Holmes, 28, of Atlanta. Police have not released the name of the other man who remained in the hospital.
Shortly after 6 p.m. officers responded to 2555 Bolton Road after getting a report of shots fired in the area, according to Atlanta police. When officers arrived they found a man who had been shot in the lower extremities, police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon said. That man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday, Lyon said.
Officers located a second victim, the deceased male, who had apparently ran inside the CVS after being shot, the spokesman said. Investigators said Holmes and at least one other person exchanged gunfire while outside CVS and it appeared that multiple shots were fired.
“It appears that there is some type of connection between the deceased male and shooter and they may have been targeting each other,” Lyon said. “It also appears that the injured male and deceased male knew each other.”
Witnesses said two men met in the parking lot, exchanged words, and then both pulled out guns and started shooting at each other, according to media reports.
Evidence found at the scene indicates that the shooting may be drug related, Lyon said. But he did not elaborate on what evidence was found.
The shooting apparently occurred outside the business and Holmes then ran inside the CVS where he collapsed, police said. Investigators are still trying to determine what occurred and to confirm the motive. No one else was injured in the shootout, police said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
